Link popularity is an important factor to rank you site higher in Search Result. You can easily count how many site has linked your site. To calculate how many site has linked your site in Google search by simply typing site:http://www.yoursite.com and will show the search result and number of site that has placed your link. You can do the same thing in yahoo or MSN search engines.

I've found that you should also use:

link:www.yoursite.com and link:yoursite.com as well as any ohter aliases you have. This is because if you find a discrepancy between the link counts you may have a hosting problem which will mean that your site doesn't get credit for all your inbound links.

That is because the engines see the URLs as separate and distinct. For example, if Google sees 10 links for www.site.com and 50 for site.com it means that your link popularity is being split between the 2 domains. In reality you have 50 or 60 links, but Google hasn't figured out that the sites are the same.

Therefore you need a 301 redirect on one of the sites to redirect all traffic and link popularity to the other site.

Only when this is done will your domain benefit from its full link building potential.
