I've read here and there that maybe being #1 for a keyword on PPC isn't the best all the time, but I've heard no explaination as to why? Anyone care to share?

it is very simple being number one is good if your search results are apt to your site.. and if you land up with the wrong audience you would no doubt pay for it in a superior cost per click and lesser conversions.
