On May 27, in 1964, first Prime Minister of independent India, Jawaharlal Nehru died in office. Nehru suffered a stroke and later a heart attack and died in the early hours of May 27. Nehru was cremated in accordance with Hindu rites on the banks of the Yamuna River, his funeral was witnessed by thousands of mourners.
Nehru was also a key figure in international politics in the post-war period and patriarch of the Nehru-Gandhi family, one of the most influential forces in Indian politics. He is popularly referred to as Panditji and Pandit Nehru.
