Heading tags are one of the most important tags appearing on the page not only to the users but they are also very important to the search engines, so if they are very closely related to the content of the page that they appear on they can really boost up your rankings. That's why I will advice you to have atleast one Head tag on each page. Headings are defined with the <h1> to <h5> tags.
These are defined with the <h1> to <h6> tags. <h1> defines the largest heading and holds the most importance in terms of on page factors, whereas <h5> defines the smallest heading and is considered least important by the search engiones. Many of the major search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN place a lot of relevance on keywords in header tags (H1, H2 and H3). As such I recommend that you sprinkle keyword rich header tags on your Web pages.
Example of some header tags:
<H1>Search Engine Optimization</H1>
<H2>Search Engine Optimization Services</H2>
Heading tags should contain your specific keywords along with any other descriptive text relevant to the content of the page. Search engines consider Heading tags as valuable source to find out what a web page is all about.
The Google ranking algorithm dictates that if you're using a <h1> tag, then the text in between this tag must be more important than the content on the rest of the page. So try to include your most important keyword phrases in heading tags on your page if you can but be careful don't overdo anything because if it can benefit you then it can also harm you.
Try to place the same keywords that you have used in your Title tag and also in your web copy in the heading tags but never compromise with quality if your heading tags sounds something that is not relevant for your users then edit the tag because stuffing your keywords is not the solution of your problems just try to be as natural as you can following these simple guidelines.
Tips on Optimizing Header Tags
Use 2-3 header tags <h1>, <h2>, <h3>, <h4>, <h5> on each page of your website. If you can't use all of them make sure that you use ATLEAST the most important one the <h1> tag.
These tags should contain your specific keywords along with any other descriptive text relevant to the content of the page.
Try to include your most important keyword phrases in header tags on your page without compromising with your quality.
<h1> is considered most important and <h6> least important by search engines. So place your keywords accordingly. Most important keyword in <h1> tag, less important keyword in <h2> tag , a little less important keyword in <h3> tag and so on. But be careful don't just stuff everything times and times to gain a high ranking.
Place only those keywords in header tags which are in the body text below the header tag and also that are included in your Title tag, Description tag and the Keywords tag.
<h1> should be placed as close as possible to the <body> tag in your webpage. The closer the better.
