SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization While SEM is an acronym for Search Engine Marketing. Main difference is is that SEO Costs lots of money and takes insanely long to get the job done.

SEO and SEM: Two Names for the Same Thing?

By most people's standards, the internet is still very young. New technologies and developments in existing technologies are appearing at an extraordinary rate. As technologies change, so does the terminology used to describe them.

I worked for three years as a webmaster. Ask a dozen people to define that term, and you'll get a lot of different answers. A webmaster may be the leader of a large team, including developers, writers, marketers, designers, usability experts, technical support people, and yes, search engine optimizers. Or s/he may perform all or some of those duties alone.

The same is true for search engine optimization. For many people, the term is a new one, and they have no idea what it is an SEO does. To others, SEO is synonymous with SEM -- search engine marketing. In my opinion, there is a big difference between the two.

SEO is the process of tailoring a website (text, titles, meta tags, alt tags etc...) so that search engines will assign a good rank to the sites for the specific search terms.earch engines introducing fees for guaranteed inclusion in their indices, directories charging for reviews and the emergence of PPC listings, SEO now has an element of media buying mixed in.

The SEM is meant to be both a tutorial and a general information resource. If you frequent other prominent SEM resources you will find that this tutorial, like most search engine promotion sites, tends to go over the same ground. This is because there are no secrets to successful search engine positioning - just experience, a lot of research and tons of hard work.

Search Engine Marketing:
Search engine marketing or SEM, refers mainly to the text advertisements which appear at the top or on the right hand side of search engine results pages. These advertising links are purchased mainly from Google (Adwords) and Yahoo (Overture). They then in turn publish these ads on their secondary ad network as well. For example AOL displaying Adwords.

Search Engine Optimization definition
Search engine optimization or SEO refers to improving a web sites' natural and organic ranking in the search engine results page. This more affordable method is often slow and new web sites may take up to a year to achieve decent rankings in Google. The methods of achieving high rankings are based on 2 main components, which follows,
On-page optimization
Keyword density
Title Tag optimization
Keywords in the content
Quality of original content
Keywords in hyperlinks
Keywords in headings and bold tags
Keywords in URL
Meta Tags (some engines)
Sitemap

SEO is only a very small part of the SEM, which focuses on local and outside corrections, in order to get a higher ranking on search results pages. SEO also works well in conjunction with other SEM disciplines, such as traffic in Google analytics.SEM includes all known strategies used to market on the Internet through search engines such as Google, Live and MSN.

SEM stands for "search engine marketing" and SEO stands for "search engine optimization."SEM is the all-encompassing broad phrase that includes SEO as well as paid search activities such as Google AdWords purchases.SEO, on the other hand, is simply a subset of SEM.Some people mistakenly think that SEM = PPC while SEO = organic. SEO does equal organic, but as you can see by the definition above, SEM does not equal JUST paid search
