Pure <a href> </a>link is important to get all your site crawled by search engines search engines usually skip image links and most of the image link is not crawled by search engines and search engines and not able to crawl flash link so try to avoid flash link if it not possible then you should make sitemap that contains all pages link and help the search engines to crawl properly.

Some times <a hre f= ""> </a> is a get a problem in fetching the link over multiple platform, it's happened with me so i could say, link does not found sometime else.

but it's mostly used in getting the links. i know that, and used in every script such as java, php at all web scripting.
