Does Off-topic inbound links cause problem to your site or does search engines ignore them? - Search engine optimization tip feb 19 2005, Sunday, February 20, 2005

Many of us have this problem with offtopic inbound links, Some people think off-topic links are bad for a site, The fact that is not the case, Internet is a huge network of websites, Anysite can link to anysite that is just a simple rule of thumb,

For example if I run an ice cream site and my friend runs a real estate site is it wrong to link to my friend's site recommending his services to my visitors, Nope, Infact Seos or search engine optimizers are the ones worried about off-topic inbound links, Some misguided webmasters, site owners also worry about off topic links,

From Search Engine Genie team's point of view there is nothing wrong in getting off topic links for a site, Just get them natural not artificial by link buying, Our site gets a lot of natural backlinks from various sites simply for quality contents do that for your site too, Attract people to link to your site,

Search engines today are not sophisticated enough to identify quality or related inbound links, If they ever think of doing it, they have to spend a lot of on it and also it will use up a lot of resources for them,

Best rule
Dont get too many sitewide offtopic links,
Dont go for too many unrelated links,

SEO Blog team,

sometimes you can't help how many links you get, especially if you own a very resourceful site, they will generate themselves..

but thats not what this comment was intended for...

the BLINDINGLY obvious point you missed in that little blurb was the most important of all.. anchortext

maybe if your 'SEO Team' knew what they were talking about, one of them would have noticed this..

It doesnt matter where your links are, they could be on an insurance site, a travel site, a PORN site... it doesnt matter! as long as the following apply:

1)the external linking site is not disregarding rules set by google (i.e. no link farms, etc)
2)the link to your site is static (not dynamic)
3)the link contains RELEVANT anchor text.. not 'click here' or 'website'

contrary to what the 'SEO Team' are telling you, Google CAN and DOES understand what these links are saying: by comparing their anchor text with the content on your site and deciding whether it is relevant!

I agree with the first 2 points you mention, Regarding the 3rd point it is not necessary at all. Only SEO people use relevant anchor text,

People who link out naturally will rarely use relevant anchor text to a site, The advice you are giving looks like you are into link brokering industry, Only link brokers suggest dont worry about off-topic links if the anchor text is irrelavant then your site is doomed by google or if the anchor text is relevant search engines apreciate it,

A simple example ill give you is check for the word leave, Disney's site ranks because lots of porn sites link to disney to leave the site on their disclaimer page if the people are underaged(below 18 or 21 ) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=leave

that implies to all the sites ranking including google.com yahoo.com etc,

Same thing happens to google bombs which still works well with google, just anchor bomb a site and it ranks,

Dont go for too many unrelated linksWe clearly mentioned dont get too many unrelated links, We mentioned too many just to be on safer side,

Only SEO people use relevant anchor textexcuse me but isn't the title of this blog SEO BLOG? I would imagine a LARGE percentage of your readers are SEOs, therefore my point is valid.

The advice you are giving looks like you are into link brokering industryi'm not.

A simple example ill give you is check for the word leave, Disney's site ranks because lots of porn sites link to disney to leave the site on their disclaimer page if the people are underaged(below 18 or 21 )thanks for proving my point that anchortext is the most important part of your IBLs.

Dont go for too many unrelated linkscorrection: don't "go for" ANY unrelated links, as far as anchortext is concerned.. whenever you "go for" a link, make sure you request a relevant keyphrase to be added as it's anchor.

..none of your points in that comment proved me wrong at all!

Search Engine Optimization, also known as SEO, is the process getting a higher rank in search results in order to get increased amount of visitors to a website. Higher a Web site ranks in the results of a search, the greater the chance that a user will visit that site. SEO helps to ensure that a site is not only accessible to a search engine but also improves the chances that the site will be found by the search engine. Search engine optimization plays a vital role because each search engine follows a different algorithm and has different rules for web page elements, submissions and metadata.
However, the question is why search engine ranking and thus search engine optimization is so important? Researches reveal that consumers are more likely to purchase products from sites that they find through search engines because a visitor who reaches your site through search engine is more likely to be seeking for your product and less likely to be a window shopper. The visitors who come to your website are the ones who have targeted you. They have been looking for your product or service. Hence you can say they are highly targeted customers thus the conversion rate is high and the effort minimum.
