Windows 7 to be released on October 22nd inspite of the "show stopper bug", Saturday, August 08, 2009

Windows 7,the latest OS from Microsoft,is set to release on October 22nd.Microsoft managed to sign off the Windows 7 RTM (release to manufacture) build on June 23.A week later ,the RTM build was stamped as a "show stopper" bug and it was expected that this bug will be a hindrance for the release on October 22nd.The bug became a major issue on the web until recently.

The bug that was reported was this..Once a user runs "CHKDSK/r" in command prompt,it will crash the entire system. This was because running this command resulted in a memory leakage, which led to the system crash.

Following the widespread issue this "show stopper" bug created in Windows 7, the president of Microsoft's Windows Division, Steven Sinofsky recently mentioned in a statement that the bug though initially reported as a "critical bug" and then a 'showstopper' bug, would not delay the release of Window 7 on the decisive date.

Microsoft have held a chip-set controller responsible for the error and have suggested Windows 7 customers to call/visit their motherboard manufacturers and download the most modern chipset drivers for their particular motherboard.

Microsoft sets limitations for Windows 7 upgrade, Wednesday, July 01, 2009

Microsoft has fixed the date of Windows 7 release as Oct 22nd,but now though this date remains unchanged, Microsoft has announced some limitations.Microsoft has restricted the number of machines which can be upgraded freely to its new operating system to just 25.

Microsoft recently revealed details of the Windows Upgrade Option program for the initial time.Consumers who buy a Vista-based personal computer as of last week are qualified to upgrade their system to Windows 7 at no or modest cost when the latter releases in October.

The limitation has however created controversies from some industry watchers. Michael Silver,Gartner analyst who published a research titled "Enterprises Should Demand Windows Upgrade Option." ,has mentioned that organizations need to comprehend their Windows 7 requirement and obtain the necessary privileges for the most excellent value.

Microsoft releases Beta version of Bing, Monday, June 01, 2009

Microsoft has released the Beta version of Bing (formerly known as Kumo).Bing is expected to replace Microsoft's Live Search. The full launch is scheduled for June 3rd.

The home page of bing is quite impressive as the images in the background changes everyday. The so called "decision engine" Bing introduces new features with the intention to perform faster. To be more specific the search engine was developed with the aim of offering swift answers to users search queries, especially in the field of shopping, local business, information and knowledge, travel as well as health research. This would also mean that the businesses will have to move away drastically from the common search of keywords during the process of SEO campaigns.

It returns results purely based on their relevancy to individual searchers and displays them based on their subcategories grouping rather than whether they have keywords which match the search query.

Just go to the home page msn.com and type in any of the keywords and press search. You will be directed towards bing.com search result page.Well should we call this clever marketing?Anyhow,we need to wait and see if this search engine is going to be a google beater.

Experiment with the bing search engine at www.bing.com

Downgrade options for Windows 7 by Microsoft, Thursday, April 09, 2009

Microsoft provides the option of downgrade for Windows 7 Customers. The options are available to Windows Vista as well as to Windows XP. Microsoft intends to offer n-2 downgrade option with Windows 7 to enable customers to plans their migrations from XP. Thus this download option is a good news for users of Windows Vista and Windows XP.

The Vista version of Windows was not received well by many Microsoft users. Microsoft doesn't usually provide active support for more than 2 versions of Windows. Hence there has been a great deal of apprehension about the loss of XP support when the new OS was announced to be released soon.

With the release of Windows 7, Microsoft hopes to overcome the stains caused by Windows Vista.

Latest version of Internet Explorer launched by Microsoft., Wednesday, March 25, 2009

Microsoft has made the latest version of Internet Explorer IE 8, the world's most popular web browser to be available for download .Microsoft revealed that the Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) is much faster, user-friendly and extremely secure than the previous versions of IE.

Internet Explorer is presently utilized as the main browser by around 67 per cent of the world. This is a clear reduction from 91% in 2004,due to rival's such as Mozilla's Firefox, Apple's Safari as well as Google's chrome. Due to the ubiquitous occurrence of IE,it has become a target for hackers trying to prey on its programming areas. For Microsoft to get back its lost market share it needs to convince the net users that the latest version is more secure.

Steve Ballmer, the chief executive officer of Microsoft, has conveyed that Microsoft promises to deliver a browser through which people can get apt information in a fast manner. He also stated that IE 8 provides protection which is incomparable to other browsers.A new feature known as "Accelerators" has been added. Through this feature, users can look an address on a map, without the need to navigate to a separate website. In addition,"Web Slices", which are redesigned flash sites helps in accessing favorites for a net user.

Canonical link element, Friday, March 06, 2009

The top 3 search engines Google,Yahoo and Microsoft have come together in order to launch a new "canonical" link tag which will handle the problem of duplicate content. This tag assists webmasters in order to determine which URL they require the search engines to concentrate on when the website contains a lot of vastly similar or duplicate contents which is pointed to by many URLs.

Joachim Kupke, senior software engineer, and Maile Ohye, developer programs tech lead at Google have mentioned that this tag provides an opportunity to have greater control over the URL's which are returned in search results,if your site has identical contents, corresponding to different URL's

Assume the following 2 pages contain similar contents
http://www.canonicaldemo.com/product.php?items=allequipments
http://www.canonicaldemo.com/product.php?items=equipments

Suppose we need the search engine to display this page in the results page
http://www.canonicaldemo.com/product.php?items=equipments,

then the canonical tag has to be used in the following manner
<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.canonicaldemo.com product.php?items=equipments"/>

Microsoft and Google Return to Basics, Thursday, January 22, 2009

Microsoft and Google have lot in common than the dominance of their respective markets. Both have utilized their cash flows to pursue many side projects in order to move into wider segments. And neither of them have had much success. The recession has had a severe impact on their efforts. Google, just cancelled its print advertisement ambitions, and Microsoft have managed to sell its long-held stake in the cable operator Comcast.

Microsoft's main expertise still in software - its operating system and other programs. These hold around 82 percent of its revenue and nearly all of its operating income. The company has used a lot of those profits to diversify into products like video games and online search, though they haven't obtained much profit from these areas.

Microsoft's Xbox game console just had had its first profit last year after being for nearly 7 years on the market.Microsoft's online search effort has also not been very successful. Its MSN portal has a dismal 8.5 percent share of American search market, and the unit which holds it lost around $480 million last quarter.

Google makes virtually all its revenue from advertising related to Internet searches. Still, that has not stopped it from pouring money - and employee time - into online video, cloud computing and lobbying for renewable energy projects. Analysts say the video site Youtube remains barely profitable. The same goes for Google's free online software initiative, in which it has invested a huge amount.

Release of Windows 7 Beta, Friday, December 26, 2008

People who attend the next month's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) could get the first glance at Windows 7,the next version of Microsoft's client OS.At its Professional Developers Conferencewhich was held in Los Angeles in October, Microsoft informed about the release of the beta early in 2009. Though everything has not been confirmed, signs are pointing that the release date could possibly be the CES show in Las Vegas.CES is scheduled for Jan. 8-11.

Microsoft will be releasing Windows 7 in early 2010, although some industry observers expect it may be out by the end of 2009 because of feeble customer response for thier operating system Windows Vista. Several business customers in particular have opted to skip Vista and run XP till Windows 7 is released in the market.

An wholesome new look included with new features makes Windows Live Messenger into a real competitor for Yahoo!Messenger. As usual, one can send instant messages, call a computer, dial a phone number, post a mobile message or send an e-mail. Editing of status display and starting a video chat with friends is possible. Skins and emoticons are some of the new features included in Windows Live Messenger. During installation , users are also prompted to install the Rhapsody Music Service which enables one to play and share music from the Rhapsody catalog.

The main features include that we can create custom emoticons by choosing an image on our computer which will be automatically resized. Additional best features of Microsoft Live Messenger are the Whiteboard, Remote Assistance and Application Sharing.

A major drawback is ,when we receive a file,it will be saved in the default directory instead of prompting to the user to choose the location yourself. The Web Calling service is available for long distance calls for selected countries. The important offline messages feature is not working at all.

So it's a genuine drag that there may be a serious security flaw in the browser. The public is being urged to use other browsers while this security flaw is fixed and Microsoft prepares a suitable patch to fix this issue.

The entire network of people using the internet is at risk. This problem is extremely serious as it could give opportunities to criminals to tap into your computer and steal your password which could be disastrous.

Until now , what this flaw has managed to steal are game passwords, but it's clear what the hackers intentions are.Several experts are suggesting users to find alternate browsers to overcome security risks but this is what John Curran, head of Microsoft UK's group said "I cannot recommend people switch due to this one flaw."

Microsoft announces MSN Java Deal, Tuesday, December 02, 2008

Users who download or upgrade Java for Internet Explorer will be prompted to install a MSN search bar that will set Microsoft's search engine as the predefined one.The deal announced by Microsoft for US surfers only, will enable several users to shift from Google in a couple of days.

Those who are installing the Java Runtime Environment for the first time will get a prompt to download and install the MSN and to make Microsoft the default choice for their browsers; those users who have previously installed Java on their personal computers will instead get the same prompts from the Java update interface.

The deal between Sun Microsystems and Microsoft is one of their very first on the the consumer side. However, there are some who suspect that the deal may not have such a big impact,as most users would still revert back to the very old Google.

Microsoft Backs New Yahoo Search Team, Sunday, November 30, 2008

Microsoft Corp is taking up a new management team to take control of Yahoo Inc.'s Internet search business and sign a partnership deal following its failed takeover attempt.

Microsoft will put up $5 billion to back Jonathan Miller, the former chief executive officer of AOL, and Ross Levinsohn, a former president of Fox Interactive Media.

Microsoft is seeking ways to revive its online advertising business as the global recession stifles spending and Google Inc. wins more search users. For Sunnyvale, California-based Yahoo, which spurned Microsoft's bids of as much as $47.5 billion this year, a deal may help shore up revenue after losing out on a partnership with Google.

The terms would give Microsoft a 10-year operating agreement to manage Yahoo's search business, plus a two-year option to buy it for $20 billion. Senior directors of the companies have agreed to the outline of the deal, the newspaper said, without citing anyone.

However Levinsohn denied the report, according to a blog post by the Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital.

SearchTogether,a new research project from Microsoft, Thursday, November 27, 2008

Adaptive Systems and Interaction group at Microsoft Research Redmond have released a beta of SearchTogether, which is a free Internet plug in that allows groups of people to collaborate on Web Searches. Meredith Ringel Morris, a researcher spearheading the project conveys that SearchTogether is just a portion of a larger project about collaborative search.

As updated in one of the blogs, Microsoft's SearchTogether is a breakthrough and different from traditional search, which is executed solo. SearchTogether gives opportunity for people at different locations to execute searches as a team.It basically enables people to divide responsibilities and pooling results in a shared Web space on the browser.

Existing search Engines enable users to find Web content on an individual basis.Search interfaces have not yet been able to support collaborative search. Collaborating on search generally means that while one person is at a keyboard, the other makes suggestions. It could also be possible that while two people, each viewing a Web browser, they would be using instant messaging or a phone. The product is expected to become very popular among schools, colleges and universities, where students would have to work on multiple projects.

"We made an offer, we made another offer, and it was clear that Yahoo didn't want to sell the business to us and we moved on .We are not interested in going back and re-looking at an acquisition.
