Microsoft may be the only company with the means to challenge Google's Internet search dominance head on, but a number of firms are trying to compete with Google with services that tackle aspects of search that is not covered by Google's index of Web pages. Aardvark - a firm whose cofounders also include two ex-Googlers - is tackling something that it calls "social search." This is how aardvark functions.Instead of looking at Web pages to search answers to obtain queries, Aardvark's service tracks a person's network of social contacts. Ask Aardvark for any kind of question ranging from restaurant recommendations to home enhancement tips, and the service will pass on the question to Facebook and Twitter friends who have recognized themselves as "experts" on a variety of topics. The aardvark service, which has obtained praise from the New York Times' David Pogue and other tech bloggers, was started as a beta version earlier this year but accessing Aardvark required utilizing instant messaging software or an iPhone app. Recently, the company put the search box directly on a website - vark.com - enabling it to become more reachable for a wide range of people. Similar to the so-called real time search engines popularized by Twitter, Collecta and OneRiot, though presently Aardvark depicts a small segment ,it might be quite dangerous for Google in future . Most of the content that transmits through these new types of search services is not essentially reachable by Google's search engine.Google is making its efforts to tackle the situation by licensing the Twitter data feed. As more innovative forms of search evolve,Google will find itself having more such talks. Labels: aardvark, google, msn, search engine, yahoo

The top 3 search engines Google,Yahoo and Microsoft have come together in order to launch a new "canonical" link tag which will handle the problem of duplicate content. This tag assists webmasters in order to determine which URL they require the search engines to concentrate on when the website contains a lot of vastly similar or duplicate contents which is pointed to by many URLs. Joachim Kupke, senior software engineer, and Maile Ohye, developer programs tech lead at Google have mentioned that this tag provides an opportunity to have greater control over the URL's which are returned in search results,if your site has identical contents, corresponding to different URL's Assume the following 2 pages contain similar contents http://www.canonicaldemo.com/product.php?items=allequipments http://www.canonicaldemo.com/product.php?items=equipments Suppose we need the search engine to display this page in the results page http://www.canonicaldemo.com/product.php?items=equipments, then the canonical tag has to be used in the following manner < link rel="canonical" href="http://www.canonicaldemo.com product.php?items=equipments"/> Labels: canonical element, canonical tag, google, link tag, microsoft, seo news, yahoo

Microsoft Corp is taking up a new management team to take control of Yahoo Inc.'s Internet search business and sign a partnership deal following its failed takeover attempt. Microsoft will put up $5 billion to back Jonathan Miller, the former chief executive officer of AOL, and Ross Levinsohn, a former president of Fox Interactive Media. Microsoft is seeking ways to revive its online advertising business as the global recession stifles spending and Google Inc. wins more search users. For Sunnyvale, California-based Yahoo, which spurned Microsoft's bids of as much as $47.5 billion this year, a deal may help shore up revenue after losing out on a partnership with Google. The terms would give Microsoft a 10-year operating agreement to manage Yahoo's search business, plus a two-year option to buy it for $20 billion. Senior directors of the companies have agreed to the outline of the deal, the newspaper said, without citing anyone. However Levinsohn denied the report, according to a blog post by the Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital. Source:Google News Labels: google, microsoft, seo news, yahoo

After Microsoft opted for a bid for Yahoo in February, Google and Yahoo began several conversations to see if Google could help Yahoo to remain independent. Thus came the advertising agreement which the two companies signed in June. This deal was supposed to deliver Yahoo $250 million to $450 million in additional operating cash flow in the first year. However,Google chose to abandon this controversial deal after the Justice Department notified the companies that it would file an antitrust suit to block it. Google's Chief Executive Eric Shmidt said in an interview which was posted in a blog,"We canceled the deal with about one hour to go before a lawsuit was going to be filed against our deal. We concluded after a lot of soul-searching that it was not in our best interest to go through a lengthy and costly trial which we believe we ultimately would have won." On the contrary,Yahoo said it would have preferred to defend the deal in court. "Yahoo strongly believes we would have prevailed in court if the Department of Justice had filed a lawsuit, but unlike Google, we were prepared to defend our agreement,"said Tracy Schmaler, a Yahoo spokeswoman in a blog.Yahoo's Chief Executive Jerry Yang said that he was upset that Google had chosen to walk away.
