\nHow do you spell Levenshtein?<\/p>\n
Doing a good job of helping Search users to<\/p>\n
correct misspelled queries is super important for two main reasons: a) 5 billion<\/p>\n
crawled docs and a bleeding edge ranking algorithm can\u2019t do much if the query<\/p>\n
isn\u2019t spelled right and b) more than 10% of all searches are misspelled! So we<\/p>\n
made sure our new search engine included a revamped spelling correction system<\/p>\n
that\u2019s much better than our old one.<\/p>\n
To improve the speller we worked with<\/p>\n
Silviu Cucerzan and Eric Brill from Microsoft Research\u2019s Text Mining, Search and<\/p>\n
Navigation Group. Silviu and Eric have developed some novel techniques for using<\/p>\n
search query statistics and iterative transformation of query strings to improve<\/p>\n
spell correction. Their published paper on this topic \u2013 Spelling correction as<\/p>\n
an iterative process that exploits the collective knowledge of web users \u2013goes<\/p>\n
into much more detail on some of the technical thinking that inspired the<\/p>\n
spelling correction system we built.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
