Search engine optimisation (SEO) differs between Google and Yahoo!, companies have been warned.
Commenting on a Promotion World blog, Michael Fleischener, an internet marketing expert, explained that often some websites are rated highly on one and not the other due to their unique algorithm rankings.
Google places more emphasis on inbound links, he said, whereas Yahoo! ranks URLs, meta-tags and keywords highly.
"Optimising for both Google and Yahoo! can be challenging," Mr Fleischener stated. "Following basic SEO principles and working to develop incoming links can help you reach the top of the largest search engines."
He recommended ensuring the website URL contains keywords as this is rated highly by both search engines, or adding an average of seven per cent keyword density to the site.
Other tips included developing a successful link building campaign, publishing a sitemap to make it easier for search engines to analyse and also using meta-tags which include keywords, titles and descriptions.
