Introduction to Google Products

Froogle is a Google’s “Product Search Engine”, launched as a “Beta Product” during December 2002. In basic term, Froogle is a searchable and browsable shopping index designed to find products for sale online. It takes the power of Google search and uses it to nearly all online products available. In fact, it does a pretty good work by finding the most relevant products based on the search done. You can find the best search results if you search on brand and model basis of the product. It becomes very important for online merchant to understand Froogle as it carries the ability to make free “eligible” visitor traffic for the products, in turn gaining maximum exposure.

The most impressive part of Froogle apart from offering excellent product search result is that it is absolutely free of cost. Merchant is not charged for product submission and also he need not pay any commission from his sales to Google. On the other hand, Froogle’s index permit the content submission with related attributes, based on price or location. These submission are accepted in Google Base, hence Froogle is now a powerful online price comparison system too.

Basic Criteria to have your feeds accepted:

To have the feed accepted by Froogle, Merchant’s online shop or site must meet the following criteria:

   1. Must be placed in United States
   2. Content should be published in English
   3. Products should be sold directly from merchant’s website
   4. Services are not permitted
   5. Products must have fixed price
   6. Merchant’s site should be crawlable by their spider googlebot

Our Experience Using Froogle

Google currently offers 4 ways to submit the products:

Single item

Data feed

Store Connector

API

Our client Mensusa.com required submitting more than 2000 items, so we had chosen the option of submitting the feeds via Data feed. It allows all your content in one single tab-delimited text or in the XML file. Data can be sent directly through Google Base account or even by using FTP. Once the file is processed the products could be added in the Google Base. Further creating and submitting your data feed could be done in just four steps:

Select Item Type:

Create Data Feed

Register Data Feed

Submit Data Feed

For the site Mensusa.com we followed the above basic structure and uploaded about 2000 products in Froogle. Initially the products were failed to get listed in Froogle. This happened due to lack of optimization for it. First month we had uploaded the products title, ID, Image link, brand name, price and description. Surprisingly, it did not get listed even then. Finally, after doing loads of case study and search product optimization process for Froogle, with in a month of time our keywords started ranking.
For that we added extra fields in Froogle like,

Color of the product

Payment accepted method

Shipping information

Size of the product

Product type

Price type

Mpn()

Quantity of products

Expiration date

Manufacturer of the products

Tips for locating your products in Froogle

When you are search for your products, you might come across different results within Google Base and Google Product Search, which actually depends on where you are searching from.
The Google Base account’s Data Feeds link would show the number of active items for every data feed under the same filename. Here you could make out that these numbers of active items are the successfully processed item from the feed qualified for posting on Google Base.

When you view your Google Base account Dashboard, you would find the active items tab. This is actually a random list of your present active items that are listed. Simultaneously, Google Base account dashboard supports only up to 10,000 products. Consequently, you would not see products listed more than 10,000. Here, you won’t see your additional items listed on Active Items screen, but they would still be appearing on search applications via Google Base and Product Search (these numbers are approximate).
