It is not just for you, these happen to everyone. Relaxing, is a great method to get ideas, inspirations and solutions. Making link exchanges is not a painless task, but time consuming if you do not spend some money in some software.

The other important thing is to take things easy. What it means is you should not complain or waste a lot of time discussing why this or that. These are common things that every webmasters faces. Once you make out this you feel a bit better.

The nofollow tag.

Some webmasters apply nofollow tag either on your link, or on their links page. Make sure that spiders could reach the page your link is on. Sometimes webmasters place the nofollow tag on the link that is pointing to their links page, which is situated on the homepage. There are plugins that emphasize links that are using nofollow tags or locate some other tools if you do not wish to verify this manually.

The robots file.

Robots files are used instead of the nofollow tags to block spiders from indexing the links page. You should check this file, which is called robots.txt and located in the core of the website. Make sure that the spiders are allowed to visit the links page.

The Meta tag.

You have to check the Meta tags of the homepage and also the page your link is on. In both tags, you should make sure they are not blocking the spiders. The attributes that you must look for are all, index, and follow.

They remove your link.

If your link partners remove your link from their website, assured not all of your partners will notify you. As long as they are not using some script to do it automatically you should check this out for yourself. There are scripts and software to do this keep record somewhere always of the location your co-worker placed your link so you can check every one or two months.

This happens for numerous reasons. Sometimes webmasters do it since they cannot find a link back. So never waste time complaining and moaning about this. Email them and let them know that you are going to take away their link because you cannot find yours. Give them an choice to re submit their link.

If after a couple of days they don't reply, send them one more email and after another couple of days remove their link if no reply.

They are not linking to the links page from anywhere else.

That is other problem. Generally if they are not linking to their links page from their homepage you could easily tell. The links page will not have menus, just a blank page with links. Many webmasters who do this do not know they have to link to their links page from homepage.

Therefore check if they are linking to it from the homepage only if the links page has links. To ensure then Google the page and see if it is in index, if it is then clearly it is linked from somewhere.

Keep these in mind when you are doing link exchanges, find some plugins or software to aid you do things faster. But treat your link partners the way you want them to treat you. Keep in mind they are helping you improve search engine rankings.
