The reason why another website would add a link to your website is anybody's guess. Your site has in order that could improve the browsing experience of visitors to the other sites which take links to your website. You have something the others do not - information, products, services and wares. A manufacturer of a product with his possess website would like to point to you as you sell peripherals which can enhance the user experience overall. A service provider could point to you as you have additional pertinent information on your website. And it's a fact that they need links too, inbound/outbound/reciprocal to improve their rankings as well. Outbound do not add to link popularity. An inbound link to your website is also an outbound link from another website.

Links could be text-based as well as graphics. An image on another website pointing to your's. A surfer clicks on that image and is brought to your website. Links have become vital for ranking on search engines. Success on the Internet is directly connected to how many other websites are linking back to your website. Receiving more inbound links is every webmaster's dream.
