Google in profit - 2006 Review,

This was an inevitable rise of online advertising by Google Inc.'s that pushed the stock to record levels this year.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based company's stock traded at a low point during March, at $331.55 on the NASDAQ. But then Google managed to hit expectations in the following two quarters. Yahoo Updates Toolbar and Bookmarks,

Yahoo is up with its new version toolbar - an amazing feature of bookmarking that's included seamlessly with Yahoo Web search, and features a "radical" new user interface.

Yahoo toolbar carries an enhanced search feature, which make suggestions as you type the keyword. Another best thing is that Yahoo had made easier to create our own custom buttons on the toolbar. If you wish to make your own button to a particular site then enter its URL and Yahoo would automatically search for the site's favicon logo and use it for the button, if one is available.

The new bookmarking feature uses folders as categorized scheme. You can create a new page while saving a bookmark or directly bookmark the existing page to the folder. You can further add tags to bookmarks and Yahoo will suggest tags to link with the page. Editing, adding new information such as tags, description or comment is very easy with this bookmarking feature.

Google Retires Pioneering Web Services API,

Google has silently sunsetted its SOAP Search API in favor of fresh AJAX API, a move irking developers who literally relied on the pioneering Web services interface.

SOAP API was released during 2002, which allowed developers to begin incorporating data for the first time through Google's search results into their own non-commercial applications. SOAP API would now continue functioning for existing users who by now have keys, but Google do not dedicate any development resources to the retired interface.

This new AJAX API does have some specific advantages over SOAP offering: It's lightweight, much easier to be used and it does not have any daily limit on queries. The SOAP API never moved out of beta status and carried 1,000 queries per day cap. But the AJAX API, in beta does have other limitations such as returning a maximum of eight results per query.

Google's Open Source Airbag,

Every technology user has experienced an application crash. Now Google's open source Airbag project has come in. According to Google, Airbag is ready for client and server components, which implements a crash-reporting system.

Airbag is especially made up of client-side libraries, a server-side processor library and build tools. Mark Mentovai explains that the client-side libraries creates dumps and helps in sending them to a crash server.

The server-side process library then reads out the crash dumps and further transforms them into information, which is useful for debugging. The build tools are able to make sense of native debugging information, turning the data into a system, which is understandable by the processor.

Currently the Google's Airbag project does not have formal release on Google Code Page. Developer could pull out Open Source Airbag components from the project's Subversion source control code repository.

Google's top searches,

In 2006 people were more interested learning about online social networks, Borat's American invasion, Paris Hilton and definition of promiscuous, according to Google's annual list of top searches.

Today Google processes billions of searches every month and calls the results the zeitgeist - a "general intellectual, moral, and cultural climate of an era." Myspace and Bebo were top most two searches during 2006. It just shows the increasing popularity of social networks between young web surfers.

Google's video sharing website YouTube did not appear in top 10 lists, but any how its similar site, Metacafe, came at No. 4. One of the site's ticks is to pay users for actual content, which is viewed more than 20,000 times.

Google Earth embraced by geologists,

For people who have downloaded Google Earth, the chief draw is the amazing chance to look at 3-D satellite images of their homes, neighborhoods and favorite landmarks. Google Earth views of exposure, which can threaten those homes, from earthquake faults to landslides, tsunami zones and even areas that could dissolve in a quake, all overlays on the same detailed satellite images.

"The real trick lies in communicating that data to the public in an interesting and successful way," said J. Luke Blair, a geologist with the survey's Menlo Park, Calif., office.

Google Data Joins PHP Zend Framework,

With over more than 200,000 downloads in a year by Zend Framework for writing Web application in PHP could be an enterprise challenger to Java and .NET. Further PHP community aims that the trend continues this week as well with Zend Framework 0.6, a new version of platform, which has number of improvements over its predecessor.

This upgrade includes features like bug fixing and new authentication module, and on that Google's GData API for framework would be just like a crown jewel. GData has both Atom 1.0 and RSS 2.0 XML syndication system to read and write data to the Web for mashups and even other data manipulations. With GData, PHP Framework could be easier to create mashups and it can be better utilized.

"Google has been working with Zend for over a year now to make this component happen," Zend co-founder Andi Gutmans stated. Further Gutmans said that Zend Framework 0.6 implements GData in the top level Zend_GData component and not under Zend_Service.

There is no doubt that PHP's widely popular due to its ease-of-use and cross-platform support, which has somewhat taken a toll on Java and .NET," Gutmans said.

What's Cooking At MSN AdLabs?,

MSN by now had made significant investments not only in technology and personnel, but even in the area of research. One such good example is Microsoft adCenter Labs.

AdLabs was created in early 2006 but has been progressively prolonged and improved over the course of time. Let's take a look at some of the tools accessible in adLabs and potential applications:

Keyword Group Detection: By extracting themes from a precise query, this tool provides terms, which are germane or similar to that query.

Keyword Mutation Detection: This tool shows usual misspellings and other variations of a particular query, very helpful when building out a keyword search list. Also ensures that you've covered all the possible ways if someone might spell your brand name, product name, etc.

Search Funnels: With the notion of the channel being all the rage these days, this handy tool shows the exact queries instantly before or after the keyword you enter.

Search Result Clustering: This tool semantically clusters the results for a particular query in a number of diverse ways ranging from questions and answers to displaying relationships among people.

Forecasting Search Volume Seasonality: While it doesn't quite roll off the tongue like Google Trends, MSN's version is absolutely more vigorous if potentially less directional, due to its minor share of overall searches.

Keyword Forecast: Perhaps the most instant actionable tool in adLabs, the Keyword Forecast permits you to see real impressions for a query by month for the past 12 months.

Detecting Online Commercial Intention: This tool predicts the aim of each query based on the likelihood, which is commercial or noncommercial. It also ranks precise Web sites and further delineates commercial sites by informational or transactional.

The company has transformed thousands of search advertising customers in the U.S to a new platform on regional basis. Yahoo said after this changeover in U.S. it would begin to roll out the plan in other countries as well.

Despite a falling NASDAQ on Tuesday, Yahoo! shares closed up 1% at $26.75 and the stock had traded between $22.65 to $43.66 in the last 52 weeks.

A primary feature of Panama has Yahoo! ranking advertisers based on their "quality score" with their maximum keyword bid. Quality is normally based on factors like click-through rates.

IBM and Yahoo Try to Challenge Google,

IBM Corp. and Yahoo Inc. are partnering to offer a free data search tool for businesses; it is an idiosyncratic move challenging Google Inc. and also the other search specialist in this blooming market.

More broadly, though, Yahoo and IBM expect their partnership will shake up the field of "enterprise search", in this biggest providers such as, Autonomy Corp. and Norway-based FAST are seeing forays from business software kings such as Microsoft Corp. Oracle Corp. and SAP AG.

Yahoo would focus on the Web search aspect of the equation and not on the venture enterprise search. Indeed Yahoo is only interested in using the IBM deal to make a stronger brand in business environments and get people using Yahoo Web search at work more often.

Google goes open source with Web Toolkit,

Google has recently released the source code for its Web Toolkit, as it hope to attract more and more developers to its technologies and prompt new Web 2.0 applications.

The current Java based Web Toolkit version 1.3, especially designed to easy the process of building AJAX based Web apps, which work efficiently in different browsers. Google had used the elements to build some of its own product such as Gmail and Calendar. Google developers write applications in Java, and GWT converts them into JavaScript and HTML for further deployment.

The latest GWT release, 1.3 is equal to 1.2, save for its source code being accessible a strategy Google adopted intentionally to avoid confusing the existing GWT user base.

Google to Put You to the Test?,

Another Google service had been marked; it would issue tests and exams to students. This service will quiz prospective job candidates. Or it might do something else as well. But however screenshots of Google Online Assessments had proved that the service is in fact real.

Google Online Assessments site had been taken down now, and Google Press Center had been silent all the day, so the service apparently isn't ready to go public yet. Anyhow these screenshot and those CSS class names have started up some very interesting possibilities.

Now Google's Checkout service had been opened up to many other countries than United States. Regardless of where you reside, you could still purchase items with Google Checkout. Your account can be upgraded even if you do not stay in United States. The only remaining part that Google has to do is to allow global merchants as well.

Microsoft breathing new life into MSN, Saturday, December 09, 2006

Microsoft has pushed its online services as a key to the future of Microsoft; they've almost always meant Microsoft's "Live" services.

MSN.com now attracts 465 million users a month, at the same time; Microsoft is also planning to position MSN "as the best partner for current media companies"

Mr. Steve Berkowitz, Microsoft's Senior Vice President of Online Services, had made few interesting observations about MSN.

Microsoft groups its Windows Live services into three categories:
1. Search/Inform
2. Communications/Connect
3. And Protect

Microsoft's eventual goal with its Live.com is to flesh it out with its other Windows Live services, like Mail, Messenger and Spaces.

Microsoft talks about two kinds of search: Destination and Convenience. It believes it has change to make inroads in the convenience search space.

Microsoft further plans is to integrate its core Live Services into few other available Microsoft products, such as Xbox.

Berkowitz says that Microsoft's aim will be to popper users in the "sticky apps and experiences", which would make them less inclined to veer outside the Microsoft fence.
