Best practices for running multiple sites

Many webmasters are not content with running a single site as it has certain limitations and it also becomes difficult to sustain high quality to make the site an ideal one. This apart, people running commercial sites tend to feel that having multiple sites with similar content will vastly improve their chances of visibility in the search results of major search engines like Google.

There are a few factors to be borne in mind when devising an effective strategy for running multiple sites. Generally, the temptation to run multiple sites is predominantly present in webmasters who are either less imaginative or the ones endowed with large resources. But the webmasters who choose to run these multiple sites retain more or less the same content and seldom add any unique information to any of their sites making the entire exercise unproductive.

There is no denying that visitors to these types of multiple sites with repetitive content feel frustrated and sometimes even annoyed. However, the algorithms of search engines have, over a period of time, developed the intelligence to recognize sites with similar content. Webmasters running multiple sites must understand the futility of using same or similar content and realize that, by doing this they are needlessly wasting their valuable time and precious resources.

Of course, it is the prerogative of the webmasters to run as many sites as they wish, but they should understand that visitors prefer to see compelling and refreshingly different content in each of the sites. It will be an excellent proposition to provide each of the sites its own creative content and a distinct character; unmindful whether it is a single-page site or a large portfolio of many pages.

Webmasters running multiple sites must make it a point to add something strikingly different providing the visitors with creative and valuable content that is at once informative and beneficial. The content must be so rich and useful that the visitors must refer the site to their friends.

When planning multiple sites, it will be worthwhile to do some pre-study. As there are several websites dealing with the same type of information, it may be preposterous adding one more site to the numbers. Instead, it will be far more purposeful and rewarding to deal with smaller or niche topics where you have greater expertise and where the clamor for user attention is less intense.

There are many instances of webmasters opting to concentrate their resources on any one domain and make use of their domain portfolio to create a host of smaller sites linking to it. As these doorway sites have no independent worth, they will sooner than later go out of the reckoning of search results. Webmasters, who have registered multiple domains but focus on a single topic, will do well to create absolutely compelling and distinctly different content on each of the domains - or else, simply use the other sites to redirect all visitors to the main domain.

Running multiple sites is a challenging task and you should venture into it only if you have the resources and the caliber. Admittedly, it can be extremely difficult to run multiple sites keeping the content unique, fresh and engaging. It's better to have one or a just a couple of well-conceived and properly constructed sites than a multitude of unworthy sites.
