Microsoft Search Live index algorithm update

Webmasterworld guys reported a update my Microsoft live search to their index. It seems they did a major update to their core search algorithm which affected ranking of lots of websites. It seem to targeted against authority sites which tend to dominate most of the search results even if they are of less quality.

It reminds of the mess google did way back in November 2003 when they did a major update to their index doomed infamous florida update. Lets wait and see how it goes,

What will the Microsoft decide?

Google CEO Eric said, “We would be concerned by any kind of acquisition of Yahoo by Microsoft and We would hope that anything they did would be consistent with the openness of the Internet, but I doubt it would be.” This means a lot. Microsoft is known for the mistrust and it is got a history of antitrust problems. This would continue and it will create problems for the whole online world is what Google feels. Google shares the sentiments of many people around the world who are against this bid from Microsoft. The handing over of Yahoo to Microsoft will cost a huge loss to the whole world of Internet. It may prove bad for the internet is what they feel.

With these commotions going on here, Yahoo says that it is a financially potential company. The Chief Executive Jerry Yang said recently that “Yahoo! is positioned for accelerated financial growth–we have a powerful consumer brand, a huge global audience and a highly profitable operating model.” That also means that they are more worth than the Microsoft’s bid. With both the major search engines taking opposite stands against Microsoft’s bid in different positions, what do the Microsoft officials do? Is there a big change that is going to happen or a small fractional change?

Google and microsoft to pay compensation to verizon for usage of their network,

Google to pay verizon regarding usage of verizon internet network,

“There’s no such thing as a free lunch on the Internet, according to Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg, who said Thursday that providers of bandwith-intensive Internet applications, including Google and Microsoft, should “share the cost” of operating broadband networks.
According to Seidenberg, Verizon and Google are already talking about how such compensation might be structured, striking a tone far more diplomatic than AT&T CEO Ed Whitacre, who last year openly criticized Internet application providers like Google and Voice over IP provider Vonage Holdings.
“We talk to them [Google] all the time, and they understand the issue,” said Seidenberg, in a question-and-answer period following his keynote speech Thursday at the Consumer Electronics show here. Google, which already offers a bevy of online apps like email, instant messaging, voice and satellite map searches, is expected to announce a video-download service here Friday. (Google could not be reached for comment immediately.) “

Google, Microsoft no longer ‘more evil than satan’

People have heared of Googlebombs for a long time, Now there is a new kind of anchor text bombing call the MSN Bomb,

Usually google bombing or anchor text bombing is the method of adding a particular keyword or phrase in anchor text and making a particular site rank, There are some bloggers involved in this,

After the launch of MSN beta search it showed sites like microsoft and google on top of the searches for ‘more evil’ and more evil than satan, It was a bit frustrating for many users, Now MSN search has been fixed,

This is what they say on their blogs,

As mentioned in a previous post on this blog, we recently received our
first few MSN Bombs. One of these was the phrase “more evil than satan”,
which brought up both Google and Microsoft in the top 10 results. A number
of you sent us feedback on this. Well, we just pushed out our latest round of
automated relevance improvements and they changed the results. Now neither
Google nor Microsoft rank in the top 10 any more for this particular
query. Our algorithm changed its mind. Just so you know (since I’m sure
you’ll ask), this wasn’t a targeted change. We are constantly refining our
ranking algorithms to produce the best, most accurate results, so changes like
this happen all the time. Finally, for the record, we won’t be commenting
on the ranking of individual results from here on out. The algorithm
decides! Feel free to send us feedback.
